The EPA Side Tunnel Plug is so named because its utility was demonstrated during EPA testing, which requires very dry fuel. Dry fuel presents the challenge of high rates of pyrolysis and higher gas production than is optimum. Plugging a side tunnel reduces the amount of surface area that reaches gasification temperatures, and thereby reduces the rate of gas production. Use the EPA Side Tunnel Plug when fuel is very dry, when backpuffing or chugging are observed, and when longer burn cycles are desired. When using damper wood,and/or full rounds, use of this accessory may not provide any advantages.
